5 New Openings Coming to the Raleigh Area This Fall

What’s Coming to the Triangle

🏥 Atrium Health Is Putting $2 Billion Into WakeMed
It’s happening. Wake County commissioners voted 5-2 on Sept. 21 to let the WakeMed and Atrium Health merger move forward. Atrium’s committed $2 billion of its own money to modernize and expand WakeMed facilities, and it’s agreed to build new WakeMed hospitals if the deal becomes final. Not everyone’s thrilled, and the legal fine print’s still being worked out. But in a county growing this fast, more hospital capacity matters.

🏗️ West Cary’s Getting a Big Mixed-Use Project Across From Alston Town Center
Cary Town Council unanimously approved a rezoning for three parcels on NC 55, across from Alston Town Center. Plans could eventually include hundreds of homes, office space and other commercial uses. The developer first pitched 10 stories but cut that to seven. It took four years to get here, so don’t expect a ribbon cutting next month. If you drive 55, you already know this corner’s only getting busier.

🥯 NYC’s H&H Bagels Is Headed to Cary
After debuting in Chapel Hill, H&H Bagels plans to open at Cary’s Waverly Place at 316 Colonades Way. There’s no opening date yet. But every New York transplant who’s ever sighed at a Southern bagel is about to run out of excuses.

🍕 A Pizza Spot With a Hidden Speakeasy Is Coming to Downtown Raleigh
Pizzeria di Territorio is opening at 301 W. Cabarrus St., across from Red Hat Amphitheater, with Neapolitan pizza from a 900-degree brick oven imported from Italy. Here’s the fun part. You’ll find Stoccaggio, the attached speakeasy, by walking down the hallway and through the storage closet. Your pre-concert plans just got a lot more interesting.

🍩 Legacy Rolls Brings Its Cinnamon Rolls to Apex
The father-son team behind Spring Lake’s Legacy Rolls is expanding to 700 E. Williams St., off NC 55. They’re aiming for a soft opening by the end of October, with signature flavors like blueberry, cookies ‘n cream and caramel apple. Perfect timing for sweater weather. Pace yourself.

🎬 Ava Gardner Festival | Smithfield
October 2–4
Johnston County’s own Hollywood legend gets a whole weekend, and this year’s theme is her life in Spain, with live flamenco, Spanish music, films from her career and artifacts from the museum’s collection. Her great-niece, Ava Thompson, will share stories on Saturday afternoon. If you’ve never been to the Ava Gardner Museum, this is your excuse. Old Hollywood glamour, 30 minutes down I-40. Frank Sinatra would approve.

🍂 Fall Color in the High Country | Blowing Rock, NC
Weekend trip. Go later in the window for the best color.

Blowing Rock sits around 3,500 feet, so it usually hits peak color mid-month. Go early in the window and aim higher up the mountain. Go later and the whole town turns into a postcard. Either way, cool air, cozy sweaters and a Main Street made for wandering. It’s basically Stars Hollow with better views.

🗺️ While You’re There

  • The Blowing Rock | The town’s namesake attraction has the best fall color view in town, and the local legend alone is worth the ticket.
  • Glen Burney Trail | You can walk to it from downtown, and it takes you past two waterfalls on the way down.
  • Grandfather Mountain | If you’re up early in October, head here. The higher elevations change first, so the color shows up here before it reaches town.

🍽️ Eat

  • The Speckled Trout Restaurant & Bottle Shop | A 1950s gas stop turned Appalachian kitchen. Order the mountain trout and a hoecake.
  • Bistro Roca | A Blowing Rock favorite since 2005. After a fire, it’s cooking out of its sister spot, Hellbender Bed & Beverage on Sunset Drive, until it rebuilds. The trout and grits still deliver.

🛏️ Make It a Weekend

  • Chetola Resort | A 75-acre lakeside retreat just steps from downtown. Walk the lake, look for the swans and call it a night by the fireplace.

🎻 Richmond Folk Festival | Richmond, VA
October 9–11
Richmond’s riverfront turns into a three-day party celebrating American culture through music, dance, crafts, storytelling and food. You’ll catch more than 30 artists on six stages, from bluegrass and Chicago blues to Cajun and Puerto Rican bomba, and it’s all free. It’s the kind of weekend where you show up for one band and leave with five new favorites.

🍺 Fall for Greenville | Greenville, SC
October 9–11 (kickoff concert Thursday, October 8)
Downtown Greenville’s Main Street becomes one long tasting menu, with about 60 restaurants and more than 300 menu items. Add a record-breaking 92 bands across seven stages, and it’s a weekend built for grazing. Wear your stretchy pants. This is not the weekend to start a diet.
