What’s Coming to the Triangle
🏗️ Novartis Is Really Making Itself at Home in Morrisville
Novartis just confirmed a brand-new 56,200-square-foot pharmaceutical manufacturing facility at Pathway Triangle in Morrisville. It’s their fifth North Carolina location and part of a commitment to bring more than 700 new jobs to the Triangle by 2030 and nearly double their operational footprint here to over 700,000 square feet. Companies like Novartis choosing to expand their U.S. manufacturing here instead of somewhere else says a lot about where our region sits right now. It’s good news for our economy and even better news for local home values.
🛒 Cary Is Getting Its Third Whole Foods
Yes, its third. Whole Foods confirmed it’s taking over the former Lowes Foods space at Preston Corners, right off Northwest Cary Parkway and High House Road. No opening date yet, but the lease is signed and it’s officially in development. Cary already had two. At this point they’re just showing off.
🎮 Crabtree Valley Mall Just Got Way More Interesting
Level99, the 40,000-square-foot adult gaming and dining concept, is coming to Crabtree Valley Mall in 2027. It’ll be their first North Carolina location, taking over the old Belk Men’s store space. Think 50+ interactive group challenges, axe dodging, scavenger hunts, and a full dining room with Detroit-style pizza and a cocktail bar. This is the kind of thing that makes people drive in from three counties over.
🛍️ Wendell Is Getting Its Own Lowes Foods
A Lowes Foods is currently under construction at Wendell Commons, the new shopping center going up at Wendell Falls Parkway and Eagle Rock Road. It’ll be Wendell’s first full-service grocery anchor in that corridor, and it’s expected to open in 2026. Over 20,000 square feet of additional retail is planned for the same development. Wendell’s moment is officially happening.
☕ Dix Park Is Getting a Second Food and Drink Spot
If you’ve been to the House of Many Porches Market at Gipson Play Plaza, you already know Dix Park figured out the food thing. Now they’re doing it again on the other side of the park. Cottage Coffee and Park Bar are coming to the historic Flowers Cottage on the west side, with a deck overlooking the sunflower fields and the downtown Raleigh skyline. Coffee and pastries upstairs, beer and wine on the covered deck below. No firm opening date, but construction’s been underway and it’s expected before summer’s out.

Deep Purple is playing the Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown Raleigh on a Tuesday night, which is honestly a perfectly valid reason to stay up past 10. Smith Farm Goat Sanctuary opens its gates for an evening of ice cream, cornhole, and 58 very opinionated goats who will absolutely judge your outfit. It’s on a 16-acre historic farm off Sunset Lake Road, and it’s exactly as charming as it sounds. Tickets required in advance.

Saturday, August 8, 11 AM–3 PM
The MAKRS Society’s monthly makers market takes over Sweetwater Town Center in Apex with 30+ local vendors, live music, and food. It’s free, it runs every second Saturday through December, and it’s the kind of afternoon that accidentally turns into three hours because you kept finding one more thing to look at.

Yes, two goat events in one newsletter. No, I’m not sorry. Smith Farm Goat Sanctuary’s trail hike lets you wander a 16-acre historic farm at golden hour with actual goats as your hiking companions, which is objectively a better evening than most things you could do on a Saturday. Tickets required.

🎸 Doc Watson Day — Boone, NC
Friday–Saturday, August 14–15
If you’ve ever heard someone play a guitar and thought “that’s just not humanly possible,” there’s a good chance they were influenced by Doc Watson. Boone throws a free two-day celebration honoring the Deep Gap legend every August on the Jones House lawn — live bluegrass, old-time music, and musicians who carry his legacy. Friday night is free on the lawn. Saturday night moves to the Appalachian Theatre for a ticketed show. While you’re there, downtown Boone in August is exactly as good as you’d hope — walk King Street, eat somewhere with a porch, and enjoy mountain temperatures that remind you why people escape here all summer.
🌟 Starlight Cruise to Cape Lookout Lighthouse — Harkers Island, NC
Saturday, August 8, 7:30 PM
Cape Lookout National Seashore is a certified International Dark Sky Park, which means the stars out there look the way stars are supposed to look before light pollution ruined everything. On August 8, the National Park Service runs a ferry cruise from Harkers Island out to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse for a NASA-guided tour of the night sky right there on the beach. It’s one of those experiences that sounds quirky on paper and turns out to be genuinely unforgettable. Reservations are required, so don’t sit on this one.

🍑 A Day Trip to the NC Sourwood Festival — Black Mountain, NC
August 7–9
The Sourwood Festival in Black Mountain is one of those small-town NC events that sounds quaint right up until you’re two hours in and wondering why you don’t do this every year. It celebrates sourwood honey — a mountain-specific variety with a flavor profile that makes regular honey feel like it’s not even trying — with vendors, demos, live music, and all the craft fair energy Black Mountain always brings. Black Mountain itself is worth the trip: it’s a 20-minute drive east of Asheville with a genuinely charming main street, good galleries, and excellent food without Asheville prices.

⛵ A Weekend on the Crystal Coast — Beaufort, NC
Any weekend — best in summer
Beaufort is two hours southeast of the Triangle and consistently underestimated. It’s got wild horses on Shackleford Banks, a working waterfront that still looks like it did 50 years ago, and some of the best seafood on the East Coast.
🗺️ While You’re There
- Cape Lookout National Seashore — ferry out to the barrier island, walk an empty beach, and see the iconic diamond-patterned lighthouse up close. No cars, no crowds.
- Shackleford Banks Wild Horse Tour — feral horses have lived on this barrier island for 400+ years. It’s not a petting zoo. It’s genuinely wild and completely worth it.
🍽️ Eat
- Beaufort Grocery Co. — the kind of place that feels casual from the outside and then serves you something you’ll think about for weeks. Get whatever the fish is.
🛏️ Make It a Weekend
- The Inlet Inn — waterfront, walkable to everything downtown, the kind of old-school coastal inn that feels nothing like a chain hotel.
